2001-2021
2001-2021 Towards a 3rd Period of Re-birth
In 2001, the Company had its 90th anniversary. From around 2003, the shipping industry started to soar in the “bubble economy”. And in the 1st half of 2008, the bulk carrier spot market, especially for Capesize bulk carrier significantly escalated to mark a record high level of USD200,000 per day at a time. However due to several crises, i.e., the Lehman crisis occurred in the same year, the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake in 2011 and the JPY exchange rate crisis, we experienced a severe and challenging economic climate. In such situation, the Company reached its first centenary in 2011.
In the ship-owning sector, we ordered various types of newbuilding ships one after another since 2000. Especially we started to own our first VLGCs in 2008, our first Container ships and first Chemical tankers in 2016 and the most significantly we finally added the first LNG ship ever to our fleet in 2019, opening yet another new era in our history.
In addition to Meiji Shipping Co., Ltd. in Tokyo, we founded Meiji Shipping B.V. another ship-owning company in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2010 and subsequently in 2014 we renewed our Singapore ship owner, Meiji Shipping Pte. Ltd. to have more active function to run shipping business in Singapore. Alongside Tokyo, we further deepened our global partnership with those 2 bases in Europe and South-East Asia.
In the ship-management sector, we established a new ship manager company and a new manning company both in 2012 in the Philippines. In 2018, our Tokyo based ship management company MMS Co., Ltd. established Manila Training Center, a new training facility in the Philippines to enhance the quality of our manning and technical management. Number of our own fleet achieved 50 and managed fleet, including ours, reached 110 vessels in 2018.
We bought the Niseko Northern Resort An’nupuri in 2007, Surfeel Hotel Wakkanai in 2010, Hayakita Country Club in 2012, Seaside Hotel Maiko Villa Kobe in 2013 and The Windsor Hotel TOYA Resort & Spa in 2014. We also established Surfeel Hotels in Tokyo and Kobe as a manager to control the management and marketing of all hotels and expanding our hotel business. The stable revenue from the hotel business has been an indispensable support for the group, especially amidst the ongoing recession in the shipping industry.
In 2008 Meiji Real Estate Co., Ltd. bought the Sannomiya 2nd Building in Kobe and 2 years later Meikai Kosan K.K. built the Shin-Surfeel Nakameguro Building in Nakameguro, Tokyo. In 2014 we started overseas real estate business when Meiji Shipping B.V. bought a building in Amsterdam where the company is now based. Our business includes the opening the Kujira Nursery School, our first nursery school business by Meikai Kosan K.K. in 2014 and also a nursing home for the aged in 2020 – another new page in our history.
The entire group overcame a very difficult period to lay the foundations for a new start toward the Company’s centenary and the milestone year for a further development and strengths.
